Man Breaks Into Kmart to Join Friend in Jail

(TAHOE DAILY TRIBUNE)   South Lake Tahoe police arrested a 19-year-old South Shore man on suspicion of prowling and attempted burglary early Friday morning after he allegedly smashed several front doors at the Kmart at the “Y.”

About 2 a.m., police responded to the store and found the man hiding at the rear of the business, according to a statement from police.

Surveillance footage shows the man break out the front entrance doors to the Kmart and attempt to make entry into the business through the back roll up doors.

It was determined that the man’s friend had arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence by El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies just prior to the incident at Kmart, according to the statement.

The man was “upset that he was not arrested with his friend,” according to the statement. He was “reunited” with his friend in El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe, according to the statement.

Police estimate he caused $1,000 in damage.
