California governor signs bill requiring schools to teach gay history

(CNN)    Democratic California Gov. Jerry Brown said Thursday he had signed a bill that will require public schools in the state to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

The bill, believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, will also require teachers to provide instruction on the role of people with disabilities.

“History should be honest,” Brown said in a statement.

“This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books. It represents an important step forward for our state, and I thank Senator Leno for his hard work on this historic legislation.”

The governor was referring to the bill’s author, Sen. Mark Leno, a San Francisco Democrat.

California law already requires state schools to teach about the contributions of Native Americans, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, and Asian-Americans, among other groups.

“Today we are making history in California by ensuring that our textbooks and instructional materials no longer exclude the contributions of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Americans,” Sen. Leno said in a statement.

Separately, he said the bill is thought to be the first of its kind in the nation. It will take effect in January, however, state textbooks are not likely to be updated until 2015, he said.

Leno’s office cited research that shows students who learn about LGBT people are more likely to report their schools are inclusive and fair.

The bill, which passed the state legislature this month and the senate in April, according to the senator’s office, is not without controversy.

It has drawn criticism from some religious and conservative groups, like the Traditional Values Coalition, a lobby organization that says it speaks on behalf of more than 43,000 churches.

“It is an outrage that Governor Jerry Brown has opened the classroom door for homosexual activists to indoctrinate the minds of California’s youth, since no factual materials would be allowed to be presented,” Rev. Louis Sheldon, chairman and founder of the Traditional Values Coalition, said in a statement.

“If parents don’t already have their children out of public schools, this should cause them to remove them,” he said.

  • What else would anyone expect from Gov Moonbeam?

  • This is an erect penis.
This is an erect penis in somebody’s mouth.
    Any questions?

  • See, I thought this would be about them teaching children about the struggle that gay people have gone through in this country, sort of like teaching about the civil rights movement. Achievements are historical no matter the race or sex of the person achieving them; Whether they were gay, black or Irish, it shouldn’t matter and it shouldn’t have any bearing on the way people view the event. If anything else, they shouldn’t indicate ANY specifics about people; No black history month, no women’s history month – We all need to fight for ALL of our rights regardless of these things that separate us.

  • If he signs a bill to make sure history books include the achievements of LGBT people, then he should also sign a bill that says ALL races and ideologies should be included as well.

But the fact is, that is impossible. The bill he signed should be more general and include ALL races and ALL ideologies.

How many black figures and movements in US history are left out of the history books in our schools? Why don’t we take care of those first.

This is just propaganda. The guy wants LGBT votes.

  • Anyone wonder why people in California remain unemployable?

  • Woe to them that call good, evil, and evil, good. Homosexuality is a practice that originated right out of the pit of hell. Don’t need to sugar coat it. The practice of same sex relationships according to the Bible is evil.

  • How about, instead of teaching meaningless BS, they teach kids useful stuff, like reading, writing and arithmetic?

  • Look children! This is a photo of George Washington. A heterosexual He had sex with a woman.

Never mind what else he might have done….it’s sooooooooooo important for children to know who was shagging whom….

  • When does sexual orientation come into play with someones’ accomplishments? If their accomplishment has to do with gay rights or something of that effect then it should be a college level discussion. My daaughter did a report on Rachel Carson. She read an age appropriate autobiography on her. (If Rachel Carson was gay she did not want it known as she burned letters that might be construed as such.) How would have knowing Rachel Carson’s sexual orientation have been of any benefit to her or her class? Put simply; it wouldn’t and it would have over-shadowed all of her tremendous accomplishments.

Personally I am outraged. As a parent I try to make the best choices for my children and one, to try to allow them to keep their innocence as long as possible is being challenged (not taken away – I have good communication with their teachers and would be aware of such content being delivered to the class; high school will be more of an issue.) They are already in Charter schools if they have to homeschool someday…so be it.

    How dare you Governor Brown!

  • Now kids, lets start the lesson on the 70s, also known as the era of the glittering sequin. There’ll be a faaabulous test at the end so pay attention.

  • “Woe to them that call good, evil, and evil, good. Homosexuality is a practice that originated right out of the pit of hell. Don’t need to sugar coat it. The practice of same sex relationships according to the Bible is evil.” How did you even GET here?! These comments are seriously the saddest things I’ve seen all day.

  • This is a CRIME against all Children..Shame on Gov. Brown. Although I am not surprised at his approval, rumors have always been he was gay.!!PARENTS its up to you to put a STOP to this crap slimming its way into our American childrens school rooms… can put a stop to it. Shame on all gay people !

  • But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Mat 18:6 The Judgment sits and waits.
