Arrest due for mismanagement of funds in North Miami Beach, Fl
(WSVN) — An investigation into the mismanagement of funds of one South Florida city has been completed and an arrest will be made soon, according to a source.
The City of North Miami Beach handed out millions of dollars for sewer projects that were never done, a source inside the City said, and a criminal investigation into the mismanagement and theft of funds has been conducted. The investigation has been ongoing for almost a year and 7 News has learned that an arrest will be made.
According to the unidentified source, it began when people inside the City department became concerned when they noticed invoices for water and sewer projects that were billed but never completed.
During these tough economic times, officials said millions of dollars were mismanaged and stolen. “Especially at these times, municipalities, the smaller they are so much the more they’re suffering, and of course they represent a small community. So, in this case and all cases we always look for restitution, get that person, that thief, out of office and look for jail time,” said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle.
Sources said false invoices were paid from a fund for sewer projects that were never done. A source said for example, the City was billed for thousands of feet, more than four miles, of sewer pipes that were never laid.
“Well, that’s just a travesty. There’s really nothing else to say. I think as a taxpayer, North Miami Beach or otherwise definitely needs to start paying attention to who they’re electing,” said one North Miami Beach resident.
