Obama: ‘Cut Cable, Cell Phone to Afford Health Care Law’

GANGSTABAMA

(RevolutionNewsUS)   Speaking to Spanish-language media health care town hall meeting last week, President Obama dismissed concerns from a low-income man that the monthly premiums for the cheapest plans were too expensive for his family to afford. The president said the man should “prioritize health care” and cut spending on things like cable, cell phone, and other things to afford insurance.

The host of the town hall read the following to the president:

This question here comes from a gentleman who says that, yes, he wanted Obamacare for a family of three. He says, “I make about $36,000 per year. The minimum amount is $350 per month. I think that’s too much for me.” That’s a question from this gentleman here.
Who then responded, naturally, by blaming the consumer instead of the unaffordability of the “Affordable” Care Act plans.

I guess what I would say, if you looked at that person’s budget, and you looked at their cable bill, their cell phone bill, other things that they’re spending on, it may turn out that it’s just they haven’t prioritized health care because right now everybody is healthy.

I don’t think it’s likely that someone who makes around $36,000 a year is subscribed to premium cable channels and expensive cell phone coverage. Unlike the current health insurance market, affordable alternatives to expensive plans for cell phones exist. At Walmart, a consumer can purchase home telephone service for $15 a month, or could buy unlimited cell phone service for six months for only $249.99. That breaks down to about $41.50 a month for cell phone (and, by virtue of a smartphone, which can be purchased for around $50) and internet service. That’s far less expensive than over $300 a month for health insurance, plus the plans with lower premiums carry comparatively high deductibles. Even if the premiums were subsidized via some sort of credit, it’s still asking quite a lot of a person to pay the equivalent of a seventh of their income before the plan even kicks in. Also: the man asking the question is healthy.

This is just another example of President Obama being condescending and out of touch.

Obama’s Valentine’s Day bachelor golf holiday marks 23rd vacation

(WASHINGTON EXAMINER)   America, you know how to treat a president and his family. With another Presidents’ Day bachelor holiday planned by President Obama, this time golfing in California, and Aspen, Colo., resort reporters on the lookout for the annual first lady ski trip this weekend, the taxpayer’s tab for the first family’s vacations has topped $2.4 million.

But that’s just the start. That total is just from the skimpy documents detailing travel and security expenses obtained by the public watchdog group Judicial Watch from a handful of first family vacations.

When all of the reporting of the first family’s 22 vacations so far to Hawaii, Martha’s Vineyard, Spain, Colorado, Florida, Africa and elsewhere is added up, the estimate reaches over $18 million when hotel and resort rent, security hotel and car rentals, and airfare are included.

Concerned about the trip expenses and the administration’s lack of transparency on the trips, Judicial Watch has sought spending documents. They’ve had success on just eight trips and only received Air Force and Secret Service expense forms which total $2,417,595.47. Included is the $1 million tab for Michelle Obama’s 2011 trip to Africa, her $476,585 2010 vacay in Spain, the first couple’s 2009 New York City date night that cost $11,648 and the first lady’s 2013 trip to Aspen for Presidents’ Day costing $81,523.

Those expenses generally calculate onboard food, and security hotel and car rental charges. Sometimes actual receipts have been provided to Judicial Watch. For her Spain trip, for example, the Air Force spent over $1,300 on food, including potato chips, candy, and cookies. They also bought two magazines, Elle and Women’s Day.

But that’s it. Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton told Secrets, “The Obama administration has simply stopped voluntarily producing information about the costs of the travel. It is radio silence. They are in cover up mode.”

Multiple news organizations have also tallied the costs of the first family’s Christmas vacations in Hawaii, $16 million; and summers in Martha’s Vineyard, $500,000.

The White House under no administration has released detailed vacation costs, though Secret Service and Air Force records have been subject to Freedom of Information Act requests, which is how Judicial Watch has received their figures.

“The Obamas are abusing the perks of public office,” said Fitton. “Taxpayers shouldn’t be footing the bill for their luxury travel.”

How Obamacare is Hurting My Family with Chronically Sick Kids

(Pattie Curran)   I explain how Obamacare harms my family and families like mine with sick loved ones. Since many people don’t understand insurance- medication copays do NOT go toward our OOP Max, and I don’t know many people whose medication copays go toward their OOP max. Also, oral surgery, dental and other such things do not go toward the OOP Max. Link to my blog: www.catholicteapartyhippie.blogspot.com Liberals are attacking me and I don’t care. Some liberals tell me “Sorry Obamacare is hurting your family, but look how many people is IS helping.” That statement is no consolation. It is immoral to push my family into debt under the guise of helping others. If my children die, or harm comes to them, other people being helped will not console me. Since this video was made in August 2013, our 2013 OOP Medical bills now total over $23,300 as of Oct 25, 2013. Our 2014 insurance premiums will be increased $3066/yr since Obamacare passed in 2010.

U.S. Secret Service agent found dead, suicide blamed

(Reuters)   A U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to President Barack Obama’s protective detail was found dead on Saturday in an apparent suicide, a law enforcement source said on Thursday.

Special agent Rafael Prieto was under investigation for having an unreported romantic relationship with a foreign national, the source said.

The agent’s death is being investigated by the District of Columbia police, said Max Milien, a spokesman for the Secret Service.

“Rafael Prieto has a distinguished 20-year career with the Secret Service that was marked by accomplishment, dedication, friendships and the Secret Service is mourning a valued colleague,” said Milien.

Prieto was not under investigation for compromising sensitive or classified information, but because he was involved in an administrative proceeding to see if he was in violation of Secret Service rules, the source said.

Gwendolyn Crump, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, would not provide details about an ongoing investigation.

The Secret Service, which prides itself in unobtrusively protecting the president and vice president, has found itself under unaccustomed public scrutiny in recent months.

Secret Service employees were accused of bringing women, some of them prostitutes, back to their hotel rooms in Colombia in April during a trip to prepare for a visit by the president. The agency said later that nine personnel were found to have been involved in serious misconduct.

A government investigation concluded their actions did not compromise the president’s safety, but the event was an embarrassment for the Secret Service and its director issued a stricter code of conduct afterward.

A Secret Service officer was arrested in Miami last month the day after a visit by Obama after having been found passed out on a street corner.

Officers are uniformed members of the agency, and perform support services, in contrast to plain-clothed agents who directly guard the president and vice president.

Spanish-Language Version Of Healthcare Website Not Ready For Enrollment

EDITORS NOTE: I POSTED THIS TO ARCHIVE IT. IT SHOWS THAT THE ACA WAS NOT READY AT ALL TO ROLL OUT TO THE PUBLIC. IT WAS NOT POSTED TO PUSH THE APPEAL TO EMOTION PROPAGANDA THAT THE ARTICLE CONSISTS OF.

(CBS PHILLY)   An indefinite delay of the Spanish language version of the Affordable Care Act website threatens the viability of the program as a whole, according to area experts.

CuidadoSalud.gov was supposed to roll out this month, but although the website exists, the option to enroll electronically doesn’t.

That option does exist on Healthcare.gov, although the system has been plagues with problems.

“My job only is part time so I can’t afford health insurance,” said Carmen Rosa.

Rosa, who can only speak Spanish, said she would have applied online if she could, but said she was frustrated that option doesn’t exist yet.

Congreso, a Latino health advocacy group in Philadelphia, organized an enrollment fair Friday to try and sign people up.  They’ve been using paper applications and phone conversations to do so.

“But sometimes people want to read things for themselves in their own language to feel more comfortable,” said Elizabeth Rosario, a certified application counselor who said the lack of a Spanish language website is undoubtedly hurting Latino enrollment.

Rosario translates necessary information for her clients, but says sometimes things get lost in translation.

“When you have hundreds of Spanish speaking clients coming in, this is really becoming a problem,” said Rosario.

Experts said the outreach program amongst the Latino community has always relied heavily on in-person assistance, but the website was designed to alleviate some of that burden.

Hundreds of Thousands of Consumers Get Insurance Cancellation Notices Due to Health Law Changes

(KHN)   Health plans are sending hundreds of thousands of cancellation letters to people who buy their own coverage, frustrating some consumers who want to keep what they have and forcing others to buy more costly policies.

The main reason insurers offer is that the policies fall short of what the Affordable Care Act requires starting Jan. 1. Most are ending policies sold after the law passed in March 2010.  At least a few are cancelling plans sold to people with pre-existing medical conditions.

By all accounts, the new policies will offer consumers better coverage, in some cases, for comparable cost — especially after the inclusion of federal subsidies for those who qualify. The law requires policies sold in the individual market to cover 10 “essential” benefits, such as prescription drugs, mental health treatment and maternity care. In addition, insurers cannot reject people with medical problems or charge them higher prices. The policies must also cap consumers’ annual expenses at levels lower than many plans sold before the new rules.

But the cancellation notices, which began arriving in August, have shocked many consumers in light of President Barack Obama’s promise that people could keep their plans if they liked them.

“I don’t feel like I need to change, but I have to,” said Jeff Learned, a television editor in Los Angeles, who must find a new plan for his teenage daughter, who has a health condition that has required multiple surgeries.

An estimated 14 million people purchase their own coverage because they don’t get it through their jobs. Calls to insurers in several states showed that many have sent notices.

Florida Blue, for example, is terminating about 300,000 policies, about 80 percent of its individual policies in the state. Kaiser Permanente in California has sent notices to 160,000 people – about half of its individual business in the state.  Insurer Highmark in Pittsburgh is dropping about 20 percent of its individual market customers, while Independence Blue Cross, the major insurer in Philadelphia, is dropping about 45 percent.

Some Policies Targeted

Both Independence and Highmark are cancelling so-called “guaranteed issue” policies, which had been sold to customers who had pre-existing medical conditions when they signed up. Policyholders with regular policies because they did not have health problems will be given an option to extend their coverage through next year.

Consumer advocates say such cancellations raise concerns that companies may be targeting their most costly enrollees.

They may be “doing this as an opportunity to push their populations into the exchange and purge their systems” of policyholders they no longer want, said Jerry Flanagan, an attorney with the advocacy group Consumer Watchdog in California.

Insurers deny that, saying they are encouraging existing customers to re-enroll in their new plans.

“We continue to cover people with all types of health conditions,” said Highmark spokeswoman Kristin Ash.

She said some policyholders who may have faced limited coverage for their medical conditions will get new plans with “richer benefits” and the policies “in most cases, will be at a lower rate.”

Paula Sunshine, vice president of marketing with Independence, said the insurer hopes the cancelled policyholders will “choose Blue when they decide on a new plan.”

Higher Costs?

Some receiving cancellations say it looks like their costs will go up, despite studies projecting that about half of all enrollees will get income-based subsidies.

Kris Malean, 56, lives outside Seattle, and has a health policy that costs $390 a month with a $2,500 deductible and a $10,000 in potential out-of-pocket costs for such things as doctor visits, drug costs or hospital care.

As a replacement, Regence BlueShield is offering her a plan for $79 more a month with a deductible twice as large as what she pays now, but which limits her potential out-of-pocket costs to $6,250 a year, including the deductible.

“My impression was …there would be a lot more choice, driving some of the rates down,” said Malean, who does not believe she is eligible for a subsidy.

Regence spokeswoman Rachelle Cunningham said the new plans offer consumers broader benefits, which “in many cases translate into higher costs.”

“The arithmetic is inescapable,” said Patrick Johnston, chief executive officer of the California Association of Health Plans. Costs must be spread, so while some consumers will see their premiums drop, others will pay more — “no matter what people in Washington say.”

Health insurance experts say new prices will vary and much depends on where a person lives, their age and the type of policy they decide to buy.  Some, including young people and those with skimpy or high-deductible plans, may see an increase. Others, including those with health problems or who buy coverage with higher deductibles than they have now, may see lower premiums.

Blue Shield of California sent roughly 119,000 cancellation notices out in mid-September, about 60 percent of its individual business.  About two-thirds of those policyholders will see rate increases in their new policies, said spokesman Steve Shivinsky.

Like other insurers, the Blue Shield letters let customers know they have to make a decision by Dec. 31 or they will automatically be enrolled in a recommended plan.

“There is going to be a certain amount of churn in the marketplace as people have to make their decisions,” Shivinsky said.

He gets into the NYPD is getting sued over another police encounter using their controversial “stop and frisk policy.” For a change of pace Popeye is able to air the story of a police officer doing the right thing by standing up against ticket, and arrest quotas. Unfortunately but unexpectedly he lost his job over it. At the end of hour one, and continuing into hour two Popeye is joined by radio show host, and filmmaker Steve Stars. They get deep into HIV, AIDS, Obama’s EO about HIV testing, if AIDS is a biological weapon, and more.

Then-Sen. Obama co-sponsored ‘stand your ground’ law in 2004 in Illinois

(THE WASHINGTON TIMES)   The pertinent legislation was SB 2386, amending the criminal code of 1961. It was introduced in the 93rd General Assembly session and passed into law on July 28, 2004.
The text summary read: “Provides that it is an affirmative defense to a violation of a municipal ordinance that prohibits, regulates or restricts the private ownership of firearms if the individual who is charged with the violation used the firearm in an act of self-defense or defense of another. Effective immediately.”
The Illinois General Assembly website indicates then-Sen. Obama signed on as a co-sponsor on March 25, 2004.
Fast-forward to 2013, post-acquittal of Florida resident George Zimmerman, and Mr. Obama is now denouncing the very same laws he once supported.
