Six Million People Are Under Correctional Supervision in the U.S.—More Than Were in Stalin’s Gulags

(NEW YORKER)   For a great many poor people in America, particularly poor black men, prison is a destination that braids through an ordinary life, much as high school and college do for rich white ones.

More than half of all black men without a high-school diploma go to prison at some time in their lives. Mass incarceration on a scale almost unexampled in human history is a fundamental fact of our country today—perhaps the fundamental fact, as slavery was the fundamental fact of 1850.

In truth, there are more black men in the grip of the criminal-justice system—in prison, on probation, or on parole—than were in slavery then.

Over all, there are now more people under “correctional supervision” in America—more than six million—than were in the Gulag Archipelago under Stalin at its height.

That city of the confined and the controlled, Lockuptown, is now the second largest in the United States.

  • Especially for poor black Males? What the hell does that mean? so poor white men, or Latino men , or maybe Italian men don’t count or show up in the prison system, why is that? I for one am tired of the BS that black males are in prison because they are poor.they are in there in the multitude because they choose to do the crimes, and are more apt to commit crimes than any other race. They are more violent than any other races and commit a majority of all crimes. It’s not because they are poor, it’s because they are genetically programmed to be this way. It is because stories like this and many government protection laws allow them to be as racist and hateful as they desire. It’;s because of black arrogance and government sanctioning their right to be racist while claiming all others are more racist than them.

You won’t understand this until you live in a community full of blacks and see daily that they love this life style and love to be racist while blaming you for their racism all while the government sanctions these acts and give them more affirmative Action rules and laws that allow them to be criminal which sets them up for their tenure in the local prison. It is a system that is set up to promote more candidates for the private prison system in America. Give them false belief they are the victim and they will act it out, then imprison them for the act which the government sanctions in the first place while denying whites any rights or laws to protect them from these vicious animals. Thus two victims. Not one black to date has been charged with a hate crime even though about 90% of all their violent crimes fall under the hate crime statue. Because the law was created to force non-blacks to be willful or fearful victims less they ( whites ) be charged with a hate crime, after all , only whites have ever been charged with these hate crimes , with ease, and with less criminality than blacks commit in their hate crimes. Government is responsible for many blacks in prison. After all it makes private prisons rich.

  • I hate jail.

  • Are you implying that the Blacks are there because of their color? They couldn’t be there because their committed a crime, right?
