R.I. Gov. Announces Shutdown Days to Cut State Costs
(NEWSMAX) PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The office of Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri says state government will be shut down to help balance the budget.
The Republican governor said Monday that he would release details in the afternoon. The plan includes several shutdown days, spokeswoman Amy Kempe.
Lawmakers in the Democratic-dominated General Assembly passed a budget in June that forced Carcieri(kuh-CHEHR’-ee) to trim millions in personnel and operating expenses. The spending plan did not specify where the bulk of the savings would come from.
Carcieri also wants permission to withhold state spending already approved in the budget. Lawmakers balked at a similar request earlier this year.
