Man accused of stealing fruit demands apology

A Sarasota man police say stole a grocery store plum says he wants an apology and for prosecutors not to pursue charges against him.

A Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report says 63-year-old Eduardo Garcia Roves was arrested at a Save-A-Lot store after allegedly failing to pay for a 55 cent plum.

Roves says the plum was a gift from a woman he helped to her car and that he had also purchased about $10 of groceries with a $100 bill.

Protesters have demonstrated outside the store in support of Roves, saying he was discriminated against because he spoke little English.

The state attorney’s office says it is deciding whether to pursue charges.

Security for the store maintains guards acted properly during the April 7 incident.
