Teacher disciplined because her students’ scores are too high

Deliberate Dumbing Down Widget

(Fios1)   An East Rockaway teacher has accused the school district of ousting her from the classroom because her students’ strong performance on standardized tests has backfired.

Voula Coyle, a veteran fourth grade teacher at Rhame Avenue School, said her strong teaching skills have dragged down her school’s state rating.

Coyle alleged she has been falsely accused of misconduct after she brushed off administrators’ calls for teachers to do a lackluster job in order to rig the state’s ranking system.

She said in an interview with FiOS1 News that district has engaged in a campaign of harassment and intimidation against her and has fostered “a divisive environment where the children are suffering.

“They are not putting their concern where it needs to be: with the children and the taxpayers,” said the 17-year instructor at the grammar school. “And they are destroying my reputation in the community.”

Coyle and her attorney Vincent White of White, Ricotta & Marks PC in Queens, say they are considering filing litigation against the district.

Coyle, who was reassigned from her classroom to a clerical job at the end of April, said her students have consistently scored above average on state tests, winning her the highest possible rating on the pupil performance section of the state’s Annual Professional Performance Review.

But her students’ solid work has become a problem for Rhame Avenue School teachers at the next grade level and for the school as a whole, according to White.

The New York State Education Department’s performance rating system is designed to reward instructors and schools when students show academic improvement from one grade to the next, White said.

But Coyle’s students’ scores either don’t improve or get worse while they are in fifth grade. As a result a few fifth grade teachers have been rated as less than effective and the school’s entire score has been pulled down, which could pose a threat to state funding, according to Coyle.

The instructor said her superiors have regularly encouraged her and her colleagues to avoid overachieving and to keep their scores from exceeding the state rating of “effective.”

“One faculty member said our job is not to be optimal, but to be adequate. That underlying message of mediocrity was promoted,” Coyle said. Teachers were also told to accept that a third of their students would understand the material, another third would be average and the rest would fail, she said.

“You’re assuming from the start that you are abandoning a third of the children,” she said.

But Coyle said she ignored her superiors’ warnings to rein in test scores and found herself a target for termination. Coyle said she was accused of helping her students cheat on their April 2012 state tests by pointing out questions that they had answered incorrectly and encouraging them to double check their answers and redo their work.

School officials’ testing impropriety allegations went before an arbitrator, and on April 29 — the day before Coyle was slated to testify during the arbitration hearings — she was reassigned from the elementary school to a non-teaching position at East Rockaway High School, she said.

The arbitrator cleared Coyle of wrongdoing on June 4. The teacher said that the school failed to properly investigate the allegations, not bothering to question a teacher’s assistant who was present when the tests were administered and who disputed the accusations.

Nevertheless, Coyle has been notified that she will be again be assigned to administrative duty at the high school in September and that she is under investigation for new charges that she mistreated her students — a claim that she said is likewise baseless.

“I have a 17-year exemplary personnel file,” Coyle said. “I believe the school district is gaming the system.”

Calls to the principal of Rhame Avenue School and to the district’s superintendent were not immediately returned Tuesday.

Panelist at Podesta Think Tank on Common Core: ‘The Children Belong to All of Us’

NO TO COMMON CORE

(CNS NEWS)   In addressing criticism of the Common Core national education standards, a panelist at the Center for American Progress (CAP), a liberal think tank, said critics were a “tiny minority” who opposed standards altogether, which was unfair because “the children belong to all of us.”

The CAP was founded by John Podesta, former chief of staff to Bill Clinton and now an adviser to President Barack Obama.  At a CAP event to promote Common Core on Friday, CNSNews.com asked about the critics who say federal monetary incentives attached to Common Core is driving the states to implement the standards.

Paul Reville, the former secretary of education for Massachusetts and a Common Core supporter, said,  “To be sure, there’s always a small voice – and I think these voices get amplified in the midst of these arguments – of people who were never in favor of standards in the first place and never wanted to have any kind of testing or accountability and those voices get amplified.”

CA Schools to Train Kids to Sell ObamaCare

(SEAN HANNITY)   The campaign to sell ObamaCare is in full-force, and your tax dollars are paying for it! The Obama administration is reaching out to the NFL, NBA and Hollywood celebrities in an effort to promote ObamaCare. I’m not surprised that our celebrity president is reaching out to actors and athletes in order to sell his prized legislation.

But it gets even worse. Your tax dollars are going to be used to train children in government schools on the merits of ObamaCare. According to Human Events:

The Los Angeles Unified School District will use a state grant to train teens to promote ObamaCare to family members. Covered California, the state’s health insurance exchange, announced grants of $37 million on May 14 to promote the nationally unpopular law.

LAUSD will receive $990,000. The district listed as a primary outcome for its project, “Teens trained to be messengers to family members.”

No matter how well they try and sell ObamaCare, that doesn’t change the fact that it will be a disaster for our health, our wallets and our economy.

US Teacher Deems American Flag ‘Offensive’

AMERICAN FLAG

(FEDERALJACK)   The battle over the American flag has reached a middle school art class in California’s Santa Rita School District where a student was told not to draw Old Glory because it was offensive, while another student was praised for drawing a picture of President Obama. Tracy Hathaway, of Salinas, CA, told FOX News Radio her 13-year-old daughter was ordered to stop drawing the American flag and start another project at Gavilan View Middle School. She had drawn the flag and was sketching the letters, God bless America, when the teacher confronted her, Hathaway told FOX. She said, “You cant draw that, that’s offensive.” Even more striking, another student in the same art class drew a picture of President Obama and was praised by the teacher. The picture of Barack Obama was in red, white and blue hues, Hathaway said. The teacher said it was great. But when it comes to the flag all of a sudden it was offensive?

Brown eyes and blue eyes Racism experiment (Children Session) – Jane Elliott

(LudwingMedia)   Ms. Jane Elliott’s “brown eyes, blue eyes” experiment in 1970 (the third one after her first in 1968). This “Eye of Storm” documentary was made by William Peters in 1970 for ABC News and later included in the documentary “A Class Divided” (1985), which included a class reunion (of 1984.) The most telling moment is when Russell used “brown eyes” as a derogatory term to call John name, only a couple of hours through. Though, the experiment was too short to allow it to get to the point when a “brown-eyes” person does so to another fellow “brown-eyes” person.

Connecticut School Teaches Children That People Don’t Have Gun Rights

(THE INTELI HUB)   Generally the historical curriculum in government school is skewed to portray the establishment in a positive light.  History lessons make warmongers look like martyrs because the warmongers have control over the formation of these lessons.

Many of the harsh realities involving the civil war, the great depression and the civil rights movements were completely left out along with the real history of slave owning aristocratic presidents and robber barons.  These are pivotal points in history that one must have a clear picture of in order to make sense of what is going on in the world today.

Just recently a Connecticut school was busted attempting to rewrite history in regards to gun rights.

Fox reported that “The father of a Connecticut child is furious after discovering that his son’s school is teaching students that Americans don’t have a Second Amendment right to bear arms.”

“I am appalled,” said Steven Boibeaux, of Bristol. “It sounds to me like they are trying to indoctrinate our kids.”

Boibeaux’s son is an eighth grader at Northeast Middle School. On Monday his social studies teacher gave students a worksheet titled, ‘The Second Amendment Today.’

“The courts have consistently determined that the Second Amendment does not ensure each individual the right to bear arms,” the worksheet states. “The courts have never found a law regulating the private ownership of weapons unconstitutional.

The worksheet, published by Instructional Fair, goes on to say that the Second Amendment is not incorporated against the states.

“This means that the rights of this amendment are not extended to the individual citizens of the states,” the worksheet reads. “So a person has no right to complain about a Second Amendment violation by state laws.”
