PORT ST. LUCIE — A 13-year-old middle school student was arrested on a battery charge Tuesday after he admitted throwing a broken pencil and striking a classmate in the back of the head.

The seventh-grader was removed from Oak Hammock Middle School after the incident and taken to the St. Lucie County Juvenile Detention Center, where he was charged with simple battery.

The boy admitted throwing pencils, crayons and marker caps at a student who had called him names but said he accidentally struck a different student when the first one ducked, police reports state.

The victim complained of head pain and was treated at the school’s clinic.
