Kerlikowske’s Dilemma
Thursday, 14 May 2009 12:55
(Celeb Stoner) – Obama’s new “Drug Czar” Gil Kerlikowske has a problem that won’t go away. His stepson Jeffrey Kerlikowske (see mug shot) remains in a Florida prison on a probation violation stemming from marijuana and battery charges. He was arrested on March 4.
Yesterday, Kerlikowske made headlines when he stated, “Regardless of how you try to explain to people it’s a ‘war on drugs’ or a ‘war on a product,’ people see a war as a war on them. We’re not at war with people in this country.”
It would appear that the War on Drugs is at least partially responsible for Kerlikowske’s estranged son’s continued incarceration at Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach.
According to the Washington Times, Jeff Kerlikowske’s was arrested “for violating probation from a July 2007 felony battery charge and the two drug-related charges on his record. The violation was for not properly reporting his work hours and for not being in his home at the proper time.
“Among the charges from Florida agencies were marijuana possession and distribution charges, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft, cruelty to animals and larceny. Kerlikowske, who appears to have been adopted as a child by Mr. Kerlikowske during a previous marriage, was arrested for a violation on a warrant related to an original conviction of felony battery in Broward County, Florida.
“In June 2007, after pleading no contest to battery, he was sentenced to one year and one day in state prison, to be followed by two years of drug-offender probation and an additional year of regular probation.
“The drug charges included possession of 20 grams or less of cannabis in 2006 and distributing marijuana in 1998, both misdemeanors in Florida.”
New Times out of Broward-Palm Beach further reports:
“Jeffrey Kerlikowske, 39, of Coconut Creek, has a history of selling marijuana and was imprisoned in connection with an April 16, 2006, case of felony battery, for which he was released a year ago. He was arrested in Martin County for allegedly violating his parole.”
Kerlikowske should clean up his own house as he begins the more difficult job of dismantling the nation’s War on Drugs.

Hearing continues in Fort Lewis overdose death
Updated May 21, 2009 – 7:23 am
(AP) – Three Fort Lewis soldiers testifying in a military hearing have implicated a fellow soldier in providing marijuana and other drugs.
Pvt. Timothy Bennitt is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the drug overdose death of a 16-year-old girl who was found in his barracks.
Spc. Brandon Savoy testified Wednesday that he was nervous about snorting the pain killer Percocet, but that Bennitt told him it was safe if he didn’t use too much.
Savoy was testifying on the third day of Bennitt’s hearing, the military equivalent of a grand-jury proceeding.
It will resume June 2, when the defense can begin its case for the 19-year-old Bennitt, from Rolling Prairie, Ind.
The hearing will determine whether there’s enough evidence to court-martial Bennitt, who also faces drug charges.

Naked man tased, choked, kneed in chest at festival
Federal Joe writes: At first in the video the police seem to be simply doing their job because indecent exposure is illegal. The cops even offer the man some clothes. What happens next is simply sadistic behavior. It almost seems after seeing the footage that the police were waiting and hoping for him to do something for them to have an excuse to blow some steam off. Two officers grab him & throw him to the ground while one pulls his hair hard. One officer knees him in the chest full force dropping what seems like 280 pounds onto the victim. Then came the taser… see for yourself.
The Quiet Coup
The crash has laid bare many unpleasant truths about the United States. One of the most alarming, says a former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, is that the finance industry has effectively captured our government—a state of affairs that more typically describes emerging markets, and is at the center of many emerging-market crises. If the IMF’s staff could speak freely about the U.S., it would tell us what it tells all countries in this situation: recovery will fail unless we break the financial oligarchy that is blocking essential reform. And if we are to prevent a true depression, we’re running out of time.

One thing you learn rather quickly when working at the International Monetary Fund is that no one is ever very happy to see you. Typically, your “clients” come in only after private capital has abandoned them, after regional trading-bloc partners have been unable to throw a strong enough lifeline, after last-ditch attempts to borrow from powerful friends like China or the European Union have fallen through. You’re never at the top of anyone’s dance card. Continue reading
Facebook Founder Finds He Wants Some Privacy
Social networking Web sites can seem dedicated to the idea that nobody’s personal life is worth keeping private, but when it comes toMark Zuckerberg — the founder of Facebook, one of the largest networks — Facebook disagrees.
Facebook tried last week to force the magazine 02138 to remove some unflattering documents about Mr. Zuckerberg from its Web site. But a federal judge turned down the company’s request for a court order to take down the material, according to the magazine’s lawyers.

UN appoints Jewish judge to head Gaza inquiry into alleged war crimes
(DailyMail/UK) – A Jewish judge said last night he was ’shocked’ to be named as head of an investigation into claims of Israeli war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
Richard Goldstone, a South African, will examine allegations that soldiers killed Palestinian civilians in the three-week conflict with Hamas.
The appointment by the UN is believed to be an attempt to appease Israeli opposition to the inquiry. But there are fears it could prompt a Palestinian refusal to co-operate.
Mr Goldstone confessed he was ’shocked, as a Jew’ to be invited to head the mission.
He said it ‘added an additional dimension’ to the four-person inquiry team which also includes British law professor Christine Chinkin.
The judge, who is on the board of governors at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, added: ‘I believe I can approach the daunting task that I have accepted in an even-handed and impartial manner.’
In the past, Israel has snubbed human rights investigations. It was still unclear last night if its leaders intended to co-operate with the latest inquiry.

According to a Palestinian rights group, 1,417 people, including 926 civilians, were killed in the December-January war. Thirteen Israelis also died.
Mr Goldstone is urging Israeli and Palestinian authorities to cooperate with the probe.
Possible Palestinian violations in southern Israel will also be assessed, he said, telling a news conference that his team expects to travel to the region in a few weeks and issue a report to the UN Human Rights Council in July.
‘There are substantial allegations of war crimes having been committed before, during and after the military operations in Gaza,’ Mr Goldstone said.
Police ordered to release 7/7 footage
(YahooNews) – Police have been ordered to release footage of the July 7 bombers after a three-year freedom of information battle.
In chilling scenes, Hasib Hussain is also seen shopping for a battery and stopping at McDonald’s as he struggles to make his device work after the other bombs have been detonated.
The footage was described in detail in the Home Office‘s Narrative report, which was published the year after the devastating 2005 attacks.
But very little of the material has so far been made available to the public. Continue reading
2 sailors killed by Afghan soldier
(MILITARY TIMES) The Defense Department on Saturday identified the two sailors killed when an Afghan National Army soldier opened fire on them in northern Afghanistan.
Navy Lt. Florence B. Choe, 35, of El Cajon, Calif., and Lt. j.g. Francis L. Toner IV, 26, of Narragansett, R.I., were killed Friday when the soldier fired on personnel assigned to Combined Security Transition Command — Afghanistan at Camp Shaheen in Mazar-E-Sharif, Afghanistan.
A third service member was wounded in the incident. Another appeared to be unharmed but was evacuated to a medical facility for evaluation. The Afghan soldier was reported to have killed himself immediately after the attack.
Officials report that this is the first time an incident like this has happened involving an Afghan National Army soldier.
In a similar incident, an Afghan policeman in September opened fire on U.S. troops at a police station in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktia province, killing an American soldier and wounding three. The policeman was killed by other U.S. forces at the police station. One month after that, a suicide bomber wearing a police uniform blew himself up inside a police station in Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan. Two American soldiers were killed and five other people were wounded.
