Canada introduces bill supporting US deserters

(SALON)    TORONTO — Canadian Parliament will consider a bill introduced Thursday that would allow American and other war resisters to stay in Canada.

The bill, introduced by the Liberal Party’s Gerard Kennedy, would allow other countries’ military deserters to stay in Canada if their refusal to serve is based on sincere moral, political or religious objections.

Parliament has already voted twice to support war resisters, but those were non-binding motions.

Kennedy’s bill would be binding because it would amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Most war resisters in Canada are U.S. military personnel who have refused to participate in the Iraq War on the grounds that it’s illegal and immoral.

There are thought to be about 200 American military deserters who have come to Canada to avoid service in Iraq.

Canadian immigration officials and the courts have rejected efforts to grant them refugee status, and several face deportation. At least two have already been deported to the U.S.

During the war in Vietnam, thousands of American fled to Canada to avoid the draft. Many were given permanent residence status that eventually resulted in citizenship.

Canadian find may be U.S. plane lost in 1942

(MILITARY TIMES)   LONGUE-POINTE-DE-MINGUE, Quebec — Canadian divers have stumbled upon what they believe is the wreckage of a U.S. Army Air Forces amphibious plane that went down in the St. Lawrence River in 1942.

The government divers, who work for Parks Canada, announced Thursday that they came across the wreck while doing routine work near the village of Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan in eastern Quebec. It has not yet been confirmed whether it is the lost plane.

The U.S. military considers the potential discovery a major find.

“It’s tremendously important because of the history, of the co-operation between the United States and Canada, not only during that time but up to the present day and in the future,” Joe Breen, the defense attache to the U.S. embassy in Canada, said Thursday.

According to the War Department, which later became the U.S. Department of Defense, the plane had completed the first leg of a routine flight and was taking off for the return trip to base when it capsized in rough weather in the eastern Gulf of Saint Lawrence on Nov. 2, 1942.

Nine people were aboard the PBY-5A Catalina, which was based at Presque Isle, Maine.

Four crew members survived. Five others died inside the aircraft. Their bodies have yet to be recovered.

Recent sonar data indicates the seaplane is in good condition and that human remains may be found.

Parks Canada said Canada and the U.S. will work together to salvage the wreckage and to explore the possibility of eventually recovering the remains of the missing crew members.

Canadian Military Quell Staged Protests In Martial Law Training

(PRISON PLANET)   The Canadian military has taken over a city for three weeks as part of an urban warfare drill that is seeing convoys of tanks rolling down streets, “hollywood” style explosions, and scenarios involvingsimulated terrorist attacks.

According to one report out of Medicine Hat in Alberta, Canada, the army is also using actors to pose as civilian protesters, who are described as “an environmental insurgency” involved in ” insurgent attacks against the city and military, which the Provincial Reconstruction Team needs to address.”

The picture opposite, showing the army penning in protesters with placards was posted on the Medicine Hat News website yesterday.

“From a public perspective, this portion of the scenario means an increase in patrols and convoys through the city,” the report states.

Soldiers will not interfere with or search citizens’ vehicles. There may be some minor traffic delays in parts of the city. The explosives are not real and personnel are trained in the use of these special effects.”

The ongoing drills, known as “Operation Total Ram“, are officially part of preparations for approximately 300 soldiers set for deployment to Afghanistan in the fall.

Clearly it is unlikely that the soldiers will be confronted by disgruntled environmental protesters in the streets of Kandahar, however.

The following Canadian news report also shows images of civilian “actors” being rounded up into fenced off holding areas:

Operation Total Ram is scheduled to wrap up on May 8.
