‘1mn died’ from Afghan heroin, drug production ’40 times higher’ since NATO op

(RT)   Heroin production in Afghanistan increased 40 times since NATO began its ‘War on Terror’ in 2001, the head of Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service stated, adding that more than 1million people have died from Afghan heroin since then.

“Afghan heroin has killed more than 1 million people worldwide since the ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’ began and over a trillion dollars has been invested into transnational organized crime from drug sales,”Viktor Ivanov said at the conference on the drug situation in Afghanistan.

Ivanov stressed that the main factor of instability in the war-torn country remains the prosperous heroin industry.

“Any impartial observer must admit the sad fact that the international community has failed to curb heroin production in Afghanistan since the start of NATO’s operation.”

According to his presentation at UN’s 56th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna on March 11, opium growth has increased by 18 per cent from 131,000 hectares to 154,000.

As the situation in Afghanistan changed with NATO withdrawing its troops, Russia along with Afghanistan and the international community must face the new reality and develop an efficient strategy to deal with the heroin problem, explained Ivanov.

Opium production has been central to Afghanistan’s economy ever since US and NATO forces invaded in October 2001. Just before the invasion Taliban had implemented a ban on poppy growing, declaring it to be anti-Islam, which lowered the overall production. But after the West’s involvement, production resumed and now the country produces some 90 per cent of the world’s opium, the great bulk of which ends up on the streets of Europe and Russia.

  • BBC: Afghanistan retakes heroin crown (March 3, 2003)

The report said fighting illegal drug trafficking was key to the US war on terrorism.

Despite its own figures showing the Taleban had cut Afghanistan’s heroin production by about 95%, the report claimed that heroin had "financed the former Taleban regime".

The UN International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) report, released on 26 February, said that Afghanistan produced 3,400 tonnes last year, up from 185 tonnes in 2001.

So the report contradicts its own lies, which means NATO is behest to the powers that control the illicit drug industry; and the war in Afghanistan was fought to take back the poppy fields from Taliban morality. If this wasn’t true, they’d have no reason to lie.

I suppose a US$1 trillion / annum revenue source makes you almost unbeatable in democratic elections. How can probity compete?

  • Since the end of WWII, our country has been floating on cheap money to finance its black book projects and intelligence-covert wars through a the marketing of drugs. From the Corsican mob and the Golden Triangle to Lucky Luciano and the Sicilian mob. Afghanistan is no exception. Like Vietnam, Afghanistan started as a covert war to fight the so-called Communists, but also to cultivate the opium fields for a profit. Of course, Europe feel the effect of this as well as the United States. In the Philadelphia area and many other major cities, there is a growing problem with teenagers overdosing on a particular drug–heroin. I’m willing to bet that a lot of this heroin is coming from Afghanistan if not Myamar. It’s smuggled through Central and West Africa, and find itself on North American Streets. A good book to read on the subject is, "The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in The Global Drug Trade.", by Alfred W. McCoy. The book will enlighten you.
